Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield

Several Sisters of St. Joseph were honored for their sixty to seventy-five years of service, on Tuesday, June 17 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Holyoke. Some sisters, who are in Bethany Healthcare Center in Framingham were unable to join the Special Anniversaries celebration in person. For these sisters, there was be a celebration at the nursing home facility with liturgy and luncheon in their honor.

The theme for this year’s Special Anniversaries was “My Cup Overflows with Gratitude and Joy.”

Sister Kathleen Reagan

Sister Kathleen Reagan (Marion Walter) was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from Sacred Heart parish, Pittsfield. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1964; a Master’s degree in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1975; and a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1988, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-1972. In addition, from 1974-2011 she taught Sociology at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, and served as Professor Emeriti, Adjunct Faculty Member and Academic Coordinator at Holyoke Community College/Elms Program. Sister Kay lives in Holyoke, MA.

 

Sister Linda Fallon

Sister Linda Fallon (Kenneth Mary) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Stephen parish, Worcester. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in English at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1975 and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education at Worcester State College in 1989, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-2014. In addition, from 2014 until her retirement she served as Recreation Assistant at Salmon Health & Rehabilitation in Westboro, MA. Sister Linda lives in Framingham, MA.

 

 

Sister Jean Schneider

Sister Jean Schneider (Stephen Mathias) was born in North Adams, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from Our Lady of the Incarnation parish, North Adams. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1971 and a Master’s degree in Science at Framingham State College in 1978, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-2014. In addition, from 2014-present she has served as Support Team Member to Sisters in Framingham. Sister Jean lives in Brighton, MA.

 

 

Sister Joan Schneider

Sister Joan Schneider (Stephen Dorothy) was born in North Adams, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from Our Lady of the Incarnation parish, North Adams. Sister Sheila MurphySister Sheila Murphy (Timothy Anne) was born in Newport, Rhode Island and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Augustin parish, Newport. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1972 and a Master’s degree in Human Development at Salve Regina College in 1988, and taught in schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island from 1968-2008. In addition, from 2008 until her retirement she served as Parish Minister at St. Lucy’s parish in Middletown, RI, and at Caring Hands Eldercare in Newport, RI. Sister Sheila lives in Middletown, RI.

 

 

Sister Kathryn GallagherSister Kathryn Gallagher (Patrick Adrienne) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from All Souls parish, Springfield. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1973 and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Technology at Central Missouri State University in 1983, and taught in schools in Massachusetts, Kenya, Tanzania and Vermont from 1968-2003. In addition, from 2003-2006 she served as Principal at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, VT. Sister Kathryn lives in Henderson, NV.

 

 

Sister Kathleen HingaSister Kathleen Hinga (Robert Phyllis) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Mary parish, Westfield, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Chemistry at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1972; a Master’s degree in Social Work at Boston University in 1982; and a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Sociology at Boston University, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-1974. In addition, from 1976-1979 she served at Welfare & Food Coalition in Springfield, MA; from 1979-1980 at the Springfield Action Committee; from 1982-1986 at the Massachusetts Office for Children in Westfield, MA; from 1986-1990 at the Interfaith Council Project on Homelessness in Greenfield, MA; from 1987-1993 on the Congregational Executive Council; from 1990-1993 as Human Services Consultant at Organizational Development and Fund Raising; from 1993-1999 at Montague Social Ministries in Montague, MA; from 2003-2005 as Adjunct Faculty at Smith College; and from 2005 until her retirement as Assistant Professor of Social Work at Western Connecticut University. Sister Kit lives in Framingham, MA.

 

Sister Linda WilkSister Linda Wilk (Clare Theodore) was born in Adams, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from Notre Dame parish, Adams. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1970 and a Master’s degree in Education and Reading at Westfield State College in 1977, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-2013. In addition, from 2013-present she has worked for Sheltering Wings in Burkina Faso. Sister Linda lives in Bethalto, IL.

 

 

Sister Patricia MurphySister Patricia Murphy (James Dorothy) was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Jerome parish, Holyoke. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in English at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-1976. In addition, from 1976-2005 she served as Principal at Milford Catholic Elementary School in Milford, MA; from 2005-2011 as Vice President of the Sisters of St. Joseph; and from 2011 until her retirement at the Clothing Center at St. John’s Parish Ascension Campus in Worcester, MA, and as Director of Afterschool Programs at Union Hill School in Worcester, MA. Sister Patricia lives in Uxbridge, MA.

 

 

Sister Rhea QuintinSister Rhea Quintin (Rita Joseph) was born in Acushnet, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Joseph parish, New Bedford, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at Salve Regina College in 1971 and a Master’s degree in Reading at Bridgewater State College in 1982, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1971-1994. In addition, from 1995-2004 she served as Appointment Driver at Mont Marie; from 2004-2014 as Assistant Activities Director/Assistant Pastoral Care/Medical Records at Sisters of Providence Infirmary/Mary’s Meadow in Holyoke, MA; and from 2014-present as Member of Support Team to Sisters in Framingham. Sister Rhea lives in Framingham, MA.

 

Sister Roberta SalahSister Roberta Salah (Patricia Robert) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1965 from St. Luke parish, Westboro, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1970 and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education at Worcester State College in 1978, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1968-1979. In addition, from 1979-1988 she served as Principal at St. Mary’s School in Southbridge, MA; from 1988-1994 as Principal at Trinity Catholic Academy in Worcester, MA; from 1994-1999 at Mont Marie Development Office; from 1999-2003 as Assistant Principal at St. Bernadette Pre-School/Daycare in Northboro, MA; from 2003-2005 and from 2007-2014 as Elementary Teacher at Venerini Academy in Worcester, MA; from 2005-2007 as Principal at Milford Catholic Elementary School in Milford, MA; and from 2014 until her retirement as Recreation Assistant at Salmon Health & Rehabilitation in Westboro, MA. Sister Marlene Mucha (John Anastasia) was born in Gilbertsville, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from St. Mary parish, Uxbridge, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965 and a Master’s degree at Rhode Island College in 1974, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1965-2017. In addition, from 1996-present she has served as Spiritual Advisor at Cursillo Women’s Retreats; from 2003-2013 on the Board of Trustees at the College of Our Lady of the Elms; and from 2017-present at the Student Success Center at the College of Our Lady of the Elms. Sister Marlene lives in Chicopee, MA.

 

Sister Maxyne SchneiderSister Maxyne Schneider (Dorothy Mathias) was born in Adams, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from St. Patrick parish, Williamstown, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Boston College in 1976, and from 1965-1996 taught at the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Springfield College, Fitchburg State College, and Regis College. In addition, from 1983-1987 she served as Academic Dean at the College of Our Lady of the Elms; from 1987-1993 as Congregational Administrator at the Sisters of St. Joseph; from 1994-2008 as Co-Founder and Executive Director of House of Peace and Education, Inc. in Gardner, MA; as Grant Writer at Weston Rehabilitation Associates in Holyoke, MA; and from 2011-2017 as President of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Maxyne lives in Holyoke, MA.

 

Sister Anne Carroll

Sister Anne Carroll (Jeanne Lawrence) was born in Millville, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from St. Augustin parish, Millville. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965 and a Master’s degree in Biology at Rhode Island College, and taught in schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island from 1965-1994. In addition, from 1978-1988 she served as Principal at Worcester Central Catholic School; from 1994-1996 at South Central Massachusetts Rehabilitation Resources in Sturbridge, MA; from 1996-2011 at South Central Massachusetts Elderbus, Inc. in Southbridge, MA; and from 2014-2019 as Secretary for Social Security and Health Insurance at the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Anne lives in Holyoke, MA.

 

 

Sister Cornelia RoySister Cornelia Roy (Margaret Charles) was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from St. Francis parish, North Adams, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965; a Master’s degree in Reading at Westfield State College in 1974; and a Master’s degree in Religious Education at Boston College in 1984, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1965-1987. In addition, from 1987-1990 she served in Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Springfield; from 1990-1993 as Associate Retreat Director at Passionist Monastery in West Springfield, MA; as Director of Religion Curriculum at the Diocesan Schools Office in Springfield, MA; from 1997-2001 as Campus Minister at the Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; from 2001-2003 as Congregation Representative to the Rutland Sisters; from 2003-2006 as Principal at Holyoke Catholic High School; from 2008-2009 as Assistant Superintendent of Schools at Diocese of Springfield; and from 2014-2017 as Teacher at Holyoke Catholic High School. Sister Dorothy Pilkington

Sister Dorothy Pilkington (Theresa Eugene) was born in Middletown, Connecticut and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from St. Mary parish, Windsor Locks, CT. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965; a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973; and a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1976 and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1965-1973. Sister Judith Carvalho (Irene Manuel) was born in Newport, Rhode Island and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from Jesus Savior parish, Newport. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1965 and a Master’s degree in Science Education at Worcester State College in 1972, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1965-1988. In addition, from 1988-2018 she served as Manager at Maplewood Farm in Portsmouth, RI. Sister Judy lives in Portsmouth, RI.

 

 

 

Sister Ann Marie McKennaSister Ann Marie McKenna (James Rita) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1960 from Blessed Sacrament parish, Springfield. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1963, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1965-1991. In addition, from 1991-2014 she served as Support Staff at Mont Marie Health Care Center. Sister Ann Marie retired in 2014 and lives in Framingham, MA.

Sister Shirley Ann Davis

Sister Shirley Davis (James Bernard) was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1955 from St. Michael parish, Brattleboro. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the College of St. Joseph the Provider in 1962; a Bachelor of Arts degree at the College of St. Joseph the Provider in 1964; and a Master’s degree at Catholic University of America in 1972, and taught in schools in Vermont from 1957-1983. In addition, from 1983-1997 she served as Principal of Mount St. Joseph Academy, and from 1998-2009 as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Burlington, VT. From 2010 to her retirement, she served in the Foster Grandparent Program. Sister Shirley lives in Rutland, VT.

 

 

Sister Mary Harvey

Sister Mary Harvey (Maureen Joseph) was born in Duxbury, Vermont and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1955 from St. Andrew parish, Waterbury, VT. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of St. Joseph the Provider in 1962 and a Master’s degree in Communications at Webster College in 1980, and taught in schools in Vermont from 1957-1986. In addition, from 1986-1998 she served as Journalist at the Vermont Catholic Tribune; from 1988-2003 on the Board of Trustees at the College of St. Joseph; from 1994-2001 as a Counselor on the Leadership Team; from 1986-2009 she taught Humanities at the Community College of Rutland; and from 2002-present as a Reporter for Mission. Sister Mary retired in 2009 and lives in Rutland, VT.

Sister Shirleyanne Greene (Richard Louise) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1955 from Immaculate Conception parish, New Lebanon, NY. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1971 and a Master’s degree at North Adams State College in 1977, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1958-1977. In addition, from 1978-1988 she served as Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph parish in North Brookfield, MA; from 1988-1994 as Director of Religious Education at St. George parish in Worcester, MA; from 1994-2000 as Parish Minister at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in Worcester, MA; from 2000-2008 as Receptionist at Good Will Industries in Pittsfield, MA; from 2009-2012 in the Senior Community Service Employment Program at Elder Services of the Berkshires in Pittsfield, MA; and from 2015-2016 as Spiritual Care Coordinator at Mr. Carmel Health Care Center in Lenox, MA. Sister Shirleyanne retired in 2016 and lives in Pittsfield, MA.

 

Sister Diane Gaudet

Sister Diane Gaudet (Loretta John) was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1955 from Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Chicopee, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1969; a Master’s degree at Anna Maria College in 1979; and certification in Social Work in 1981, and taught in schools in Massachusetts from 1958-1973. In addition, from 1973-1978 she served as Principal of Worcester Central Catholic Elementary School; from 1978-1989 as Associate Superintendent at Worcester Diocesan Schools Office; from 1989-1990 at Bancroft Human Services in Worcester, MA; from 1990-1993 as Mental Health Clinician at G.B. Wells Human Service Center at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, MA; from 1993-1994 as Guidance Counselor at Trinity Academy in Southbridge, MA; from 1994-2006 at SCM Elderbus, Inc. in Charlton, MA; and from 2006 until her retirement at Tri-Valley Elder Services in Dudley, MA. Sister Diane lives in Holyoke, MA.

 

 

Sister Kathryn FlanaganSister Kathryn Flanagan (John Irene) was born in Gardner, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1955 from Sacred Heart parish, Gardner, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1970; a Master’s degree in Reading at Worcester State College in 1975; and an Elementary Administrator Certificate in 1975, and taught in schools in Massachusetts, Kenya and Tanzania from 1958-1997. In addition, from 1987-1995 she served as Founder and Director of St. Joseph’s Kitchen in Pittsfield, MA; from 1995-1997 as Reading Specialist at St. Mary’s School in Lee, MA; and from 1998-2000 as Pastoral Minister at Sacred Heart parish in Pittsfield, MA. Sister Kathryn retired in 2000 and lives in Framingham, MA.

 

 

 

Sister Kathleen KirleySister Kathleen Kirley (Catherine Thomas) was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1955 from St. Jerome parish, Holyoke. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1966; a Master’s degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1968; and a Ph.D. in Urban Education and Curriculum at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1971, and taught at St. Joseph’s School in North Adams, MA from 1958-1966 and at the College of Our Lady of the Elms from 1966-1977. In addition, from 1977-1990 she served as Director of Continuing Education at the Elms; from 1990-1998 as Dean of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies at the Elms; from 1998-2004 as Faculty and Assistant for Planning at the Elms; in 2003 as Interim Director of Bilingual Education at Westfield Public Schools; and from 2004-2009 as Archivist at the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Kathleen retired in 2009 and lives in Framingham, MA.

Sister Mary Magdalen Ward was born in Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim, Ireland and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on February 15, 1950 from St. Joseph parish, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1962 and a Master’s degree at Westfield State College in 1972, and taught in schools in Massachusetts, Kenya and Tanzania from 1952-1994. In addition, from 1994-2012 she served as Receptionist at Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Sister Mary Magdalen retired in 2012 and lives in Framingham, MA.

 

 

Sister Mary T. Shea

Sister Mary Teresa Shea (Kathleen John) was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on July 2, 1950 from St. Jerome parish, Holyoke. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in 1962; a Master’s degree in Human Resource Development at American International College in 1975; and a Master’s degree in Internet Technology at the Graduate Center at Marlboro College in 1999, and taught in schools in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont from 1953-1999. In addition, from 1998-2013 she served as Tech Prep Coordinator and Website Coordinator at Holyoke Community College, and continues to serve on the Helpdesk there. Sister Mary lives in Holyoke, MA.
